How do I add a new device to my farm?

Here you add a device (an ESP32 board, for example) to your farm before it starts sending readings. Once added, it shows up in the device list on Home.

  • Role needed: Admin or Owner.
  • Where it is available: web.
  • The device ID must match the firmware: it is the same device_id the board sends, otherwise its readings will not reach this device.
  • Some devices are added automatically the first time they report. If yours is one of them, you do not need these steps.
  1. Sign in (see How do I sign in to my farm?).
  2. Press Devices in the side menu. On a phone, it is in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Under the “📡 Devices” heading, press the “+ Add device” button.

The side menu: press Devices (1) to open the Devices page.

  1. Press + Add device. The form opens.
  2. Type the Device ID exactly as in the firmware, such as greenhouse-2. This field is required.
  3. Type a display name and a room / location if you wish (both optional).
  4. Leave “Issue this device its own API key now” ticked if you want a key just for it. Otherwise it keeps using the shared master key.
  5. Press Add Device.

Adding a device: the + Add device button (1), the ID (2), the name (3), the room (4), the issue-a-key option (5) and the Add button (6).

If you issued a key, a window shows it. Copy it right away: it will not be shown again. See Rotate a device key.

  • The device appears in the list as never reported until its first reading arrives (see What the states mean).
  • Change its role (Master, Soil or Hydroponics) and link it to a unit from its card. See Edit or delete a device.

The device is added but no readings arrive. Check that the device ID on the page matches the firmware’s device_id character for character, and that the key you flashed is correct.

An error appears when adding. The ID is most likely already used. Pick another, or check “Removed items” if you deleted such a device earlier.

I do not see the Add button. Your role is Viewer. Only Admins and the Owner can add devices.
